A long-time storefront on Main Street in La Crosse has a new purpose.

The building at 506 Main is now a local history museum, called the La Crosse Area Heritage Center.

Tuesday is the first day it will be open to the general public.

County historical society director Peggy Derrick says the history displays are not limited to the white settlers who reached the area nearly 200 years ago, but also feature Hmong and Ho-Chunk history.

The current exhibits at the Heritage Center will also include a fishing boat, and displays about La Crosse’s many breweries.

Derrick says one display that she hopes will attract local visitors is a mural depicting the Mississippi River.
