La Crosse County up 39 cases, two hospitalized as state numbers soar due to backlog; Monroe reports 5th death in past 2 days
Another 39 cases, two hospitalizations Wednesday of La Crosse County residents due to COVID-19.
The county now has 3,907 total cases and 127 have been hospitalized.
The county is averaging 42 cases a day the past week. Ten days ago that average was 28, which was the lowest since Sept. 8.
The Coulee COVID-19 Collaborative metrics dashboard Wednesday update show cases in the red, while new hospitalization and care capacity in green.
On the community indicators page, three metrics are in the red (concerning), and the other three are in the yellow (caution).
The red metrics include cases interviewed within two days, identified contacts traced and daily testing goals met. The most alarming of those three metrics may be the last since the goal is 75% and the county is at just 38.4%.
The three metrics in yellow — contacts reached within 1-2 days, testing turnaround time and positive test ratio — are all nearly at their goals.
With the increased cases the past week, the La Crosse School District has had to, again, postpone bringing students back into the classrooms, after announcing schools would open Oct. 26.

In surrounding counties, after reporting four deaths on Tuesday, Monroe added another one Wednesday, bringing the total to nine. That person was in their 80s.
Here are the cases, hospitalization stats in surround counties for Wednesday:
— Monroe also added 11 cases (998 total – 172 active – 5 hospitalized)
— Trempealeau added two cases (907 total – 142 active – 4 hospitalized)
— Vernon added four cases (443 total – 106 active – 4 hospitalized)
— Winona added 10 cases (1,209 total – no other data available)
— Houston and Buffalo counties stopped reporting daily stats.

Wisconsin: 182,687 cases, 9,704 hospitalizations, 1,681 deaths
Minnesota: 126,591 cases, 9,147 hospitalizations, 2,281 deaths
Iowa: 110,644 cases, 1,594 deaths
Statewide, Wisconsin continues to catch up from a weekend backlog with 4,205 cases, 167 hospitalizations and 48 deaths.
As is the norm, the state asks to look at the seven-day case data for a more accurate account of virus activity. The state at this point is averaging 3,444 cases a day the past week.
Minnesota tied a single-day high in deaths (35), had a near-high with 105 more hospitalized and added 1,082 cases.
Minnesota also had 35 deaths on May 28, which was in the midst of a nearly two-month stretch in April to June where the state averaged 21.3 deaths a day.
The 103 hospitalized follows 126 on Tuesday, which was a single-day high.
Minnesota is averaging 1,532 cases a day the past week.
In Iowa, 18 deaths, 1,433 cases and 85 hospitalized Wednesday. The state has had 62 deaths the past three days. There were 534 Iowans in the hospital Wednesday, breaking Tuesday’s all-time high (501).
