No specific buildings chosen yet for possible local history museum

Backers of a proposed history museum for La Crosse aren’t ready to settle on a site just yet.

A WIZM story this week that the CenturyLink building on Front Street was suggested by a task force as a potential museum site was based on a consultant’s report, posted on the city’s website.

But it wasn’t an actual offer, according to the county historical society.

Task force member Tim Acklin says CenturyLink and the old Mobil Oil property were cited as hypothetical examples of where a museum could be placed.

Acklin says architects still need to be consulted for ideas on what such a museum might look like.

A La Crosse Area Heritage Center is about to open soon downtown, in the 500 block of Main Street, close to the cathedral.

The task force was formed three years ago, to see how historic museums work in other cities.
