Governor’s assistant, La Crosse native, dies in tubing accident

A La Crosse native who worked as personal assistant for Governor Tony Evers has died in a tubing accident in southern Wisconsin. 

Ben Belzer was 25. 

The Green County sheriff’s office reports that Belzer was tubing on the Sugar River south of Madison on Saturday when he went under the water, and his body was found three hours later. 

Ben Belzer was a Logan High School graduate, and went to work for Evers early in 2019. 

Before that, he worked for La Crosse Congressman Ron Kind. 

In a statement released on Monday, Gov. Evers said “Ben was simply incomparable. He was remarkably talented and, even at 25, thoughtful and mature beyond his years. He was exceptionally bright and inquisitive, and he had a thirst for knowledge and understanding of our state and our world. He brought out the best of us with his wit, never shying away from a laugh even in the most frustrating of times. Ben was always optimistic about how we could be part of making this world a better place. He brought an unrelenting joy and drive to his job and the work we do each day, and it resonated with every person we met, everywhere we went.”
