City of La Crosse will help families having trouble with utility bills

A grace period on utility payments and late fees will be ending soon in Wisconsin.

Because of the coronavirus, the state decided in March to suspend disconnections and fees for late payments.

That period will end on July 25th, and city leaders in La Crosse plan to be flexible about collecting utility bills.

But there are limits to how nice the city will be.

La Crosse utilities manager Bernie Lenz knows of at least one customer who just stopped paying the bills, because the state wasn’t imposing fines.

“We just want to avoid that, that people are just not paying, just because they want to hold on to their cash. If there’s a problem, we definitely want to work with them,” said Lenz.
