La Crosse police ready for next planned demonstration

Peaceful demonstrations against racism in La Crosse are scheduled to resume Wednesday night, with a 7 p.m. gathering in Riverside Park, and city police are prepared to monitor the event.

Capt. Jason Melby of the La Crosse Police also points out that his officers are prepared as well for demonstrations or activities that are not planned well ahead of time, which occur in an “organic” way.

Melby says it could be ‘problematic’ if too many officers are assigned to duty at the event, or if it appears they’re going out of their way to maintain order.

The Wednesday event in question is a demonstration against the death of a black man, George Floyd, who was being restrained by officers in Minneapolis.

It follows similar protests which occurred in downtown La Crosse three nights in a row last weekend.

Mayor Tim Kabat plans to attend tonight’s gathering in Riverside Park.
