Pleasure on tap, on campus, 49 years ago

In early 1971, the state university board of regents approved beer sales at the La Crosse campus.  The taps installed at the “Cellar” in Cartwright Center would offer one local brand and another beer made in Wisconsin.

Students still went downtown, though.  The Madrigal Bar on 3rd had a 10-cent tap night on Tuesdays, and Hamm’s Beer Night on Thursday.  Your Uncle’s Place on South 4th had a concert by the Twin Cities band Crow, known for a song called “Cottage Cheese.”

The hot new TV show in ’71 featured a bigoted New Yorker named Archie Bunker.  “All in the Family” was first seen on Tuesday nights on CBS after “Hee Haw,” and was #1 in the ratings when it moved to Saturdays, yesterday in La Crosse.
