La Crosse County has been luckier than many other places during the coronavirus outbreak.

County health director Jen Rombalski tells WIZM’s La Crosse Talk that it’s ‘wonderful’ the county has not recorded any deaths from COVID-19, and that the total number of local cases has remained under 30.

But she says county residents should not let down their guard.

“It happens quickly, so we aren’t out of the woods yet,” said Rombalski. “We’re just grateful that we have to this point not had anyone who is continuing to be in the hospital because of coronavirus nor has passed away from it in our county.”

The health department director says she recently had to turn down invitations to celebrate her young son’s birthday, because it’s too soon to ease up on social distancing.

The city of La Crosse park department says many outdoor activities are still off-limits in local parks, such as golf, baseball, and basketball.

Tennis is allowed, though, and almost all the city hiking and biking trails are open.
