Vacation planning may have ground to a halt because of the coronavirus, but tourism officials are still making plans for the season when it’s okay to travel again.

A.J. Frels at the La Crosse County visitor bureau says a summer marketing campaign for the region is ready, for when the time is right.

Frels says a recent tourism study showed 88 per cent of the people responding would like to travel sometime in the next 6 months, and people planning travel would rather drive than take a plane.

Another study, specifically of Wisconsin tourism, pointed to several counties which could be hit hard by virus-related shutdowns.

La Crosse County was # 9 in the state two years ago in revenue from tourism spending.

Frels says the county has marketing planned to appeal to short-distance travelers, and to convention organizers who might hold meetings in La Crosse.
