A city council committee needs more information before making a zoning change for a north La Crosse project.

The judiciary committee voted in favor of further information on the Star Center project, proposed for the site of a former Trane Company plant near George Street.

“I hope that people have recognized the importance of the project to our community, to make it healthier, and really be a catalyst for development of that north side,” Gundersen physician Virginia Wintersteen, one of the planners behind the Star Center project, said.

Council president Martin Gaul said he supports the project, but echoes a frequent complaint about development plans in La Crosse — that the city could be backing a tax-exempt development.

The plan commission voted Monday to support the development of a facility offering special activities to the disabled and other residents.
