A La Crosse man is going to federal prison for carrying a pistol after being convicted of a felony.

Yovon Boyd was sentenced Thursday by a federal judge to 50 months in prison for felony firearm possession.

La Crosse police discovered Boyd carrying the gun when they responded to a domestic disturbance in October of 2018.

Boyd was also accused of trying to choke his girlfriend, and he was on probation for child abuse.

His arrest was the 1,000th felony case in La Crosse County that year.

The judge said Boyd’s possession of the gun and his routine use of crack could have turned the incident into an officer-involved shooting.
