Wisconsin may have finished the year 2019 with about 40 fewer traffic deaths than the year before.

The highway toll for the year was at 532 on Dec. 29, with final figures expected next week.

The 2018 total was 576, and the number has stayed below 600 for at least six years in a row.

The 532 would be the lowest number of traffic deaths in Wisconsin since the 491 recorded in 2014.

At this point, December and March have been the safest months of this year on Wisconsin highways, while August and September were the deadliest.

La Crosse County unofficially ended the year with 5 traffic deaths, the lowest toll in four years.

Four counties in the state had no highway deaths during the year, including Richland, Pepin, and Lafayette.
