Local flu season hanging on

Flooding isn’t finished for the season.

Snow isn’t done either. And, according to medical experts, neither is the flu.

Not even health professionals are immune to getting sick, with La Crosse County health nurse Joann Foellmi trying to get rid of a cough.

Foellmi is urging people to get the flu vaccine, as the illness is expected to continue through the end of April.

Foellmi said the strain, for which a vaccine was made this season, ended up changing, so the shot may not be entirely effective against it, but getting it is still a good idea.

Fifty people have been hospitalized in La Crosse County for flu-related illness this season.

More than 1,800 in Wisconsin have died from the flu or pneumonia this season, with the vast majority being 50 or older.
