A Winona family has given $5 million to Mayo of La Crosse for expansion of the hospital’s local cancer center.

Stephen and Barbara Slaggie and their relatives have been patients of Mayo for decades.

The cancer facility, next to the La Crosse medical center on West Avenue, will be named after the Slaggies as a result of the gift.

The center is adding nearly 4000 square feet of space, including nine new exam rooms, and should be finished later this year.

Steve Slaggie is a co-founder of Fastenal in Winona.

Dr. Paul Mueller, Mayo vice president based in La Crosse, calls the family’s gift ‘tremendously generous.’
