Cemetery transfer in Vernon County ruled invalid by state Supreme Court
The Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled that a town in Vernon County does not have to take care of land believed to be an old cemetery near Wildcat Mountain State Park.
One major reason: nobody has proved that it really is a cemetery.
Several people in the Ontario area persuaded a judge to transfer an acre of land to the Town of Forest, to be designated as the Williams-Jones Pioneer Cemetery.
The petitioners believe many of their ancestors are buried on the land, even though there are no grave markers.
An appeals court struck down the land transfer, because there was no evidence of anyone actually being buried there.
Supreme Court justices unanimously have agreed with the appeals judges.

A good deviner/witcher can determine in a half hour if there are graves on that piece of property. I do it all the time as do many back-hoe operators.
