La Crosse landfill among facilities collecting deer carcasses

There’s more than one way to get rid of a deer carcass safely and legally if you live in western Wisconsin.

The La Crosse County landfill will take the carcass as will other landfill sites.

Harter’s Quick Clean Up, Southwest Sanitation and Hilltopper Refuse have also signed up with the Wisconsin DNR to provide a carcass hauling service in a multi-county area in the western part of the state.

Providing safe disposal methods for deer carcasses has been a growing trend in Wisconsin, as a way to help fight the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the state’s deer herd.

A real threat, according to the agency, which warns that even the soil an infected animal decomposes in can transmit CWD to a healthy deer.
