New home built for family of six in La Crosse, by Habitat for Humanity
A celebration for the completion of another new home in La Crosse, this time in a north-side flood plain area for a family of six.
It’s the latest local project by Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region. This one, located on Onalaska Avenue close to Bridgeview Plaza.
La Crosse Habitat director Kahya Fox presented the keys to owners Seng and Ge Yang and their four children at a ceremony Friday. Fox said the family put in many hours helping to build the house.
“Habitat for Humanity purchased this lot from the city of La Crosse,” Fox said. “It’s actually a flood-plain property, so we had to start the project by bringing in a whole bunch of fill, to bring the land up to above the base flood levels.”
The single-family home for the Yangs has four bedrooms and two baths.
Fox said homeowners put in hundreds of hours helping to build their new houses.
Seng Yang was excited to take part.
“You have to help build this whole house,” Yang said. “You get to learn the whole process, the whole Habitat system, how it works.”
Fox added that, in order to qualify for a Habitat project, the potential homeowners need to be able to pay the mortgage, show a need for the housing and be willing to take part in the construction.
