Would Tommy try for another term, 29 years ago?
In the fall of 1989, Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson announced he would decide by year’s end whether to run for a second term. Thompson was 47, and had become governor after 20 years in the state Assembly. He would run again in 1990, defeating Assembly Speaker Tom Loftus, and would go on to win a third and fourth term as governor. However, Thompson also admitted that he could see himself “winding up in Washington someday”…which he did, as a member of George W. Bush’s cabinet.
What was in your garbage? A newspaper article proclaimed that garbage would pose a “stinky problem” for America in the 1990’s. The article noted that paper made up almost two-thirds of all trash in the U.S. Another 28% was yard waste…leaves and grass clippings. Metal made up 14% of the junk, and 13% was glass…and somehow, that added up to almost 120%.
Movies getting attention that fall included “Sex, Lies and Videotape”…”The Fabulous Baker Boys”…the second “Back to the Future” movie…and “The Little Mermaid.” Under the sea, 1989, yesterday in La Crosse.
