A truck driver from Trempealeau County is scheduled to be tried in April for causing a fatal crash in Minnesota, killing a biology teacher.

Samuel Hicks of Independence has entered a “not guilty” plea to reckless homicide, in the February death of Robert Bursik of Amery, Wis.

A criminal complaint says Hicks was driving a semi 63 miles an hour when it hit Bursik’s car, which was stopped at a Lake Elmo intersection.

Hicks allegedly was looking at a cell phone shortly before the crash and did not try to brake.

Hicks made the plea Wednesday in a Stillwater, Minn., courtroom. He has no traffic or criminal charges on record in Wisconsin.
