New Horizons stages big money contest to raise awareness for domestic violence
While people all over America have been chasing big lottery jackpots, some in La Crosse got a chance at a smaller bundle of cash this week.
The New Horizons women’s shelter offered a $20,000 grand prize for people attending an event marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Patty Nuttleman, New Horizons development director, said the giveaway was a way to lighten the mood of the event at Copeland Park.
“Bring a little levity to, kind of, a dark topic,” Nuttleman said. “But, then to also provide something — dangle money out there, which usually does get people’s attention. And, it was quite successful, actually, in getting the community to engage in domestic violence awareness.”
Three had a shot at the $20,000 — and a second prize of $1,000 — but all ended up winning $250 gift cards, instead. Madelyn Gustafson (pictured above) came the closest to winning $20,000.
New Horizons is also looking for boutique and housekeeping volunteers.
