New Horizons stages big money contest to raise awareness for domestic violence

While people all over America have been chasing big lottery jackpots, some in La Crosse got a chance at a smaller bundle of cash this week.

The New Horizons women’s shelter offered a $20,000 grand prize for people attending an event marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Patty Nuttleman, New Horizons development director, said the giveaway was a way to lighten the mood of the event at Copeland Park.

“Bring a little levity to, kind of, a dark topic,” Nuttleman said. “But, then to also provide something  dangle money out there, which usually does get people’s attention. And, it was quite successful, actually, in getting the community to engage in domestic violence awareness.”

Three had a shot at the $20,000  and a second prize of $1,000  but all ended up winning $250 gift cards, instead. Madelyn Gustafson (pictured above) came the closest to winning $20,000.

New Horizons is also looking for boutique and housekeeping volunteers.
