Registration for heating assistance is now open for people living in La Crosse County.

“They look at your household size, your income and then your fuel usage,” Tom Miller, economic support supervisor with La Crosse County Human Services, said. “Those are pretty much the main factors that are looked at to determine your benefit amount.”

Miller says extra benefits could include weatherizing your house, a service that would be done by the state.

“You are automatically put on a list for potential weatherization being done,” Miller said of both homeowners and renters.

Miller says the amount you are eligible for is given in the form of a check to your heat provider, which takes it off your bill.

About 4,000 families use the program every year.
