Governor sees Coon Valley flood damage

Gov. Scott Walker flew in by helicopter Wednesday to check on western Wisconsin flood damage.

The governor’s military chopper landed at the Coon Valley Elementary School, where he met with flood victims and volunteers, who have been helping with the cleanup.

While in Coon Valley, Walker declared that the entire state would be eligible for emergency help because of this month’s severe weather.

All of Wisconsin is actually in a state of emergency, following a pattern of severe weather over the past two weeks.

Walker inspected the impact of flooding in Westby and Coon Valley.

His advice for households and businesses, which endured heavy property losses from the high water was to document it.

“For us to get to a point of a federal declaration, we need to show documentation of all the damage — both personal damage, damage to private property, that’s commercial as well as, we’ll be documenting public infrastructure,” Walker said.

The governor urged storm victims to contact their insurance carriers, along with local counties to get assistance. The original disaster declaration only covered six Wisconsin counties.
