Sparta school district goes to voters to alleviate overcrowding

Published

Voters in the Sparta School District have a chance today to help alleviate overcrowding issues that several of the elementaries are facing.

The district has seen a student increase of 287 kids over the last five years.

Superintendent Amy Van Deuren breaks down some of the challenges in a video on the school’s website (and below). The ballot questions are at the bottom of the story.

Among the things Van Deuren discusses, is how Maplewood Elementary is housed in a basement and the nursing and counseling services are in repurposed storage closets at Southside.

The two ballot questions call for a $28.5 million project to build a new elementary school and an additional $4 million for upgrades and expansions to the other elementary schools.

If both pass, taxes will increase by $38 dollars per year for every $100,000 of property value.
