Of 2,651 who voted, 68% said yes to funding

It was a no vote last year, but this time the La Crescent-Hokah school district passed its referendum.

Sixty-eight percent of the 2,651 voters approved the 10-year referendum that will increase funding by $850 per student.

The property-tax increase could add $100 dollars a year for a home worth 100,000 dollars.

Superintendent Kevin Cardille was pleased with the turnout, though that possibly could have something to do with the outcome.

“You just never know when it’s an odd election year like this and we’re the only game in town,” Cardille said. “A lot of people have come down – more than I expected, really.”

The district has faced budget challenges for several years. Cardille said they’ve cut, on average, $500,000 over the past five years.

“Give us an opportunity to provide some things that we’ve reduced for our students – student programs,” he said.

The tax increase on a $100,000 home will be an increase of $101 per year. That is per year, not per month.

All information provided by the district has a chart that shows the increase as such.

Thank you voters for your support of the district. We respect your time, support and investment in the students of our school district, your children, grandchildren and neighbors.
