Members of Weigent family help dedicate coach’s statue

Babe Weigent is officially back at 16th and Cass streets in La Crosse.

A bronze statue of the long-time Central High School teacher and coach, standing next to a young football player, has been unveiled as part of a Central reunion weekend.

Walter “Babe” Weigent served on the Central faculty for more than 30 years – mostly at the old Central High, which stood on the block now called Weigent Park.

Weigent’s daughters, Jenifer Weigent Gilbert and Dana Weigent, led family members at the dedication ceremony on Friday afternoon.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
