Mayor Kabat predicts Losey Blvd. will be changing speeds

City council will vote on the matter Thursday.

La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat was in the WIZM studio with Mitch Reynods on Monday afternoon.

On air, Kabat hit on a couple of issues within the city. Off air, the two talked about the NBA Finals.

And, while Kabat wouldn’t make a prediction on whether Golden State or Cleveland was going to win the title, he did make one on the speed limit on Losey Blvd.

Thursday, the city council will vote on lowering the speed limit from 30 to 25 mph.

Kabat’s prediction: “I think it’s ultimately going to pass on Thursday night.”

Many seem to see it as a a controversial shift. Kabat supports the change and defends the idea  against those who says his views hurt commerce.

“I would stack up our economic development, and what’s been happening with our economy locally over the last 7 years, against any place,” he said.

Kabat added that for far too long, easing traffic through the city was given a higher priority over the livability of neighborhoods. He’s out to reverse that.

“In my mind, we should be all about making sure La Crosse is a great place to live and work and play,” Kabat said, adding he will continue to push for more neighborhood-friendly streets in the city, even if that comes at the expense of swiftly moving traffic.
