A gold, silver and bronze for stories reported during 2016

The WIZM news department brought home three statewide awards from this year’s Milwaukee Press Club journalism competition.

The gold and silver were both from the same category, best short-form feature story in an audio medium.

First place went to a “What’s Buried on Brad’s Desk” song parody, in which WIZM’s Brad Williams commented on a lawsuit in the news over who wrote the Led Zeppelin classic “Stairway to Heaven.”

The same story also won a second-place prize this month from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association.

Williams also received a silver from the MPC for “Yesterday in La Crosse,” arguing that America was less politically correct in 1974 than it is now.

The bronze award came for coverage of a breaking news story, with a live report by Williams during the Mitch Reynolds show last November about the sudden closing of La Crosse’s Maid-Rite restaurant on Caledonia St.

WIZM was the only Wisconsin radio station outside of the Milwaukee or Madison markets to win awards in this year’s Press Club contest.
