Mt. La Crosse making snow, set to open next week

Hill opened Dec. 26 last year, the latest ever

La Crosse could get its heaviest snowfall of the season so far this weekend with 3-6 inches being predicted.

That’s welcome news for the Mt. La Crosse ski hill, where the crew just began making snow on Wednesday morning.

“We basically spent several hours ahead of time at 4 a.m. getting the guns in place in hopes we would be able to use all of them and we were,” general manager Darcie Breidel said.

Breidel says without natural snow, they could be ready to open the ski trails Thursday. A few inches of real snow could speed up that opening. La Crosse has only gotten three inches so far.

“It’s hard to say what the base would be, but it’s typically about a foot of snow,” Breidel said. “We’re hoping to open an extra trail or two.”

Last year, there wasn’t any snow at this time and no sign of it coming, which led to a first for Mt. La Crosse.

“We didn’t get open until after Christmas and that had never happened in company history before,” Breidel said
