Downtown La Crosse sink hole is back

Strategy of just filling it without
finding cause in didn’t work

For now, it’s just the biggest pothole in the city.

The City of La Crosse was hoping that there wouldn’t be a problem with a small sinkhole on 8th St. when crews couldn’t find a cause for it. 

It’s not big – a couple feet deep, so far – and about four feet in diameter. 

It’s located just south of newly paved Cass St.

There was a sinkhole before the paving project. The city tried to find whatever drain pipe was causing it but couldn’t. 

Crews dug down about 20 feet to find whatever leaking pipe might be causing the sinkhole but couldn’t. So, they just covered it back up and hoped for the best – hoping the sink hole would fix itself, apparently.  

It didn’t.

But the problem has been found now. So the road will get torn up, the pipe fixed and everything will get put back together. 

The pipe belongs to the Eilliot Arms apartment building, right next to the sink hole.

The owner of the building will pay most of the cost to do the work.
