No agencies in La Crosse were included

Fourteen service groups in Wisconsin will share over $18 million in grants for AmeriCorps programs around the state.

While no La Crosse agencies were included in the competitive grants announced Wednesday, many western Wisconsin residents are expected to benefit from educational and training projects receiving funds.

The grant will help carry out programs which provide housing, education and other assistance.

The AmeriCorps service model is being praised by Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

“This investment is projected to generate an addition $20 million in local support to increase the community impact in all of this funding,” Baldwin said.

The biggest single grant of $600,000 will pay for AmeriCorps activity through the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire received almost $90,000 to help teach low-income children. Marshfield Clinic received two grants, which can also help disadvantaged students.
