Onalaska 20-year contract to use La Crosse sewer is up
Cities likely to seek shorter renewal agreement
Decades ago, La Crosse and Onalaska had a bitter fight in court over annexation and issues such as water and sewer service.
Now, however, Onalaska uses the La Crosse sewer system and the contract is up for renewal.
The Onalaska city council could discuss that sewer agreement in closed session during its monthly meeting tonight.
La Crosse sewer utility manager Mark Johnson says Onalaska is likely to seek a shorter contract, unlike the 20-year pact that’s coming to an end.
“There will be some discussion about that, similar to Campbell, that’s a three-year term,” Johnson said. “It’s a very short term because of the regional discussions, so the mayor wanted to keep the term short.”
La Crosse also processes the waste water for Campbell, La Crescent and Shelby’s sanitary district 2.
La Crosse could take on more customers, but that would require votes from a few different government groups, Johnson said. Holmen is considering hooking up to the La Crosse sewer system.
