Former Onalaska city council member running for state senate

John Sarnowski sees himself as a centrist Republican

John Sarnowski is ready to dive into his latest political campaign.

The former Onalaska city council member will be on the Republican primary ballot in August for the state senate seat currently held by Democratic Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling.

Sarnowski says there’s a difference between him and his primary opponent Dan Kapanke.

“We respect each other, but I think we can give the voters a choice between where Dan stands on the issues and where I stand,” Sarnowski said.

Sarnowski sees himself as more of a centrist Republican, who doesn’t necessarily agree with some of the actions taken in Madison by the party currently in charge of state government.

“It’s a strange, strange year,” Sarnowski said of the political race. “And, just walking out and getting nomination papers, there are so many people that wanted to talk about what Mr. (Donald) Trump, and what he’s doing and what he’s saying. 

“And I’m saying, “Well, look, I’m here running for Wisconsin citizens.'”

As for Sarnowski and Trump: The two are both Republicans, yes, but Sarnowski says he’s a far different candidate.

“We here in Wisconsin need a good progressive candidate and I think I fit the bill,” Sarnowski said. “I don’t fit in the mold of Donald Trump and thankfully I’m not in that camp.”

Sarnowski has previously run for the same state senate seat. Shilling also faces a primary challenge from Jared Landry.
