Protesters gather at 5 p.m. today in front of La Crosse Center

Area environmental activist groups are sharing their message of the negative impact of frac-sand mining on the environment and quality of life.

Several facilities were previously run in Winona, Minn.

At a press conference in La Crosse Monday, Mike Kennedy from Citizens Against Silica Mining of Winona, said none of the governmental branches were of any help.

“Please, to the state of Minnesota, we’re often answered with, ‘We’re working on it.'” Kennedy said. “The only regulatory actions taken, are to have the mining and processing companies agree to do self monitoring and report to the appropriate departments and agencies. Hasn’t happened.”

What is described as a peaceful action of resistance is planned for 5 p.m. today outside the La Crosse Center, where, inside, a frac-sand industry conference will be held.
