Career fair today for local government jobs

There’s good news for La Crosse: The unemployment rate here is just 4.9 percent.

So, what’s the bad news?

The bad news for La Crosse is the unemployment rate is 4.9 percent.

That’s human resources chief Steve Salerno from the La Crosse School District.

The low jobless rate can make it difficult for local government to find the right talent when work is available.

To meet that challenge, the school system has joined with the city and La Crosse County to host a career fair today at the Southside Neighborhood Center.

The free fair will permit people to apply for job openings in local government. The event goes from 3-7 p.m.

“What’s nice is, the kind of work we do, is really in service to our community,” Salerno said. “It’s everything from entry-level positions to folks with specific technical skill sets.”

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
