Synthetic pee could be a felony

New bill part of HOPE agenda

If you’re on the hunt for some synthetic urine or fake pee to pass a drug exam, simply Google, “How to pass a drug test.”

Wisconsin lawmakers are considering a bill to make it a felony to use fake pee, and La Crosse County health educator Al Bliss hopes the bill passes, so drug users will be less able to escape detection.

“Synthetic urine can actually be purchased online at this time or somebody else can substitute their urine,” Bliss said. “It sounds kind of odd to do this for a drug test, but that’s how some people pass their drug screening.”

Four other bills in the HOPE (Heroin, Opiate Prevention and Education) agenda, aimed at fighting drug abuse, have been passed by the legislature and sent to the governor.

One includes the idea of tracking drug prescriptions quicker to prevent overdoses.

The bill will speed up the period for doctors and clinics to report certain prescriptions to a database. 

Bliss says under current law, doctors have seven days to report prescriptions for opiates and other drugs, which could leave an addict plenty of time to find those drugs somewhere.

“That would allow this 6-7 days potential for somebody to doctor shop and get other drugs from other physicians,” Bliss said. “So now this closes the gap within a 24-hour period.”
