La Crosse could face lawsuit on rental ordinance

Part of the rental-inspection ordinance appears to be on the way out in La Crosse.

That, however, won’t do away with inspections altogether.

The city is requiring rental registrations be filed within 30 days of the first of the year. It’s an annual registration and the city will use information on the registration to assist in inspections of rentals.

The registration cost is $10 per dwelling, no matter the size. Late fee is $100.

This is the first time the registrations are required to be filed around the first of the year.

A successful lawsuit by several landlords is leading to the city getting rid of one section of the rental inspection ordinance. Another lawsuit may be on the way to challenge how the rest of the ordinance is getting enforced.
