Wisconsin water undrinkable, even dangerous in places

DNR could be violating federal laws

The water isn’t horrible in Wisconsin. At least not everywhere.

But, in some places, it’s undrinkable, even dangerous, says George Meyer, head of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation.

That’s why the former DNR secretary has signed onto a petition demanding the EPA force regulators to up their game.

“The DNR is not updating the standards to protect well water and surface water,” Meyer said, “and is issuing permits that don’t have those standards.”

Meyer and others are essentially alleging that the DNR is in violation of federal laws requiring oversight on water quality.

Meyer says the lack of regulation and adherence to federal law is a policy position that begins with Wisconsin governor Scott Walker and the current secretary of the DNR.
