Madison atheist group not letting up on star and cross in La Crescent

Group calls selling where symbols rest a “sham”

It’s a black and white issue for Freedom from Religion Foundation: La Crescent’s cross and star must be moved. 

That opinion comes from attorney Rebecca Markert with the foundation in Madison.

While the Lions Club has offered to buy the public land where those lighted symbols stand in La Crescent, Markert said that move is a “sham.” 

She said under the Bill of Rights, it doesn’t matter if the vast majority of La Crescent residents want the star and cross to stay in place. If just one person is injured by their existence on government property, the symbols have to go.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area.
