Construction project cancelled amidst Oktoberfest madness

Third St. will not close on Maple Leaf
Saturday, will need to be shut down later

A planned closure of Third Street in downtown La Crosse for construction during Oktoberfest won’t happen after all. 

An early-afternoon meeting in city hall today led to a cancellation of plans to allow CD Smith to dig giant trenches into Third during Oktoberfest’s Maple Leaf Saturday. 

The contractor hoped to get some needed sewer hookups done for the Lot C project while the street was closed for part of the day anyway. 

Apparently, safety concerns about the closure and how it might impact vast numbers of festers wandering around downtown led to today’s change of plans. 

Third between Vine and State streets will now have to be closed for possibly a couple of weekdays in late October in order to get the utility work done.
