Police collect surprising amount of drugs

City hall drug box has seen nearly half-ton dropped off

A year-long collection of prescription drugs at the La Crosse police department has yielded what might seem a surprising amount of pills.

Today, Police said its city hall prescription drug box has been the drop off for around 800 lbs. of drugs in the last year.  

The drug collection box was put in place to help limit the amount of prescription drug abuse that goes on in the community.  That abuse is often said to be a path to drug addiction – both to prescriptions and illegal drugs, like heroin. 

The drug box is part of a larger, county-wide initiative to provide a safe way to dispose of household medications.  

Police ask that nothing in liquid form or drug paraphernalia get dropped in the box which is accessible during normal police lobby hours.
