Police urge caution on streets as school is back in

Kids don’t always act predictably

It’s the first day of school for most kids in Wisconsin, and a warning from police to pay a little closer attention.

Every year, the summer hiatus ends abruptly with schoolkids and morning work commuters are suddenly sharing the roadways again.

Drive cautiously and defensively, urges La Crosse police officer, Kurt Weaver. Remember that kids don’t always act predictably and may take awhile to get reaccustomed to the basic rules of crossing streets and paying attention to traffic.

Maybe steer clear of the areas immediately around schools for a couple of weeks, suggests Weaver, unless you’re a parent picking up or dropping off your children.

The police department is also urging those behind the wheel to pay attention to school buses. Stop no less than 20 feet from a bus on undivided roads and highways, say police, when stop signs are out and red lights are flashing.
