Among recommendations, eat less predator fish

Depending on where you fish in Wisconsin, you might be OK eating the whole catch or just a couple of servings.

The reasoning is because the levels of PCBs and mercury tend to vary among bodies of water, says DNR toxicologist Candy Schrank. The levels toxins in types of fish vary, too, changing the amount the agency recommends you eat in the latest fish consumption advisory, that’s just been released.

Schrank says, in general, you can eat more panfish, like bluegill and sunfish, and should eat less large predator fish, like walleye and pike.

The DNR also recommends you space out your fish meals, allowing your body to get rid of accumulated mercury toxins between servings.

Besides overall fish consumption recommendations for the state, the DNR also has county-specific guidelines in its new advisory. For example, besides the rest of the state advisories, the DNR additionally recommends more stringent limits on large catfish taken from the Black and Mississippi rivers around La Crosse.
