La Crosse Mayor, Kabat, doesn’t want raise

Proposal would pay position $80,000

This week begins the debate in La Crosse City Hall over whether to raise the mayor’s salary. 

It’s city council member Doug Happel’s proposal.  He thinks the money paid for the position should better reflect its importance in the city’s day-to-day operations. He sees the mayor like a CEO of city hall or an elected city administrator.

If council members pass it, the new $80,000 salary would take effect after the next election for mayor.  Currently, the salary is just over $77,000 and was last increased in 2009.

Current mayor Tim Kabat has said he’s not a fan of Happel’s proposal.
