Average home sewer bill expected to rise $5 a month in La Crosse, to pay for improvements and maintenance

Sewer bills in La Crosse will be rising, following a vote by the Board of Public Works at its weekly Monday morning public meeting.

The average residential customer will be charged an extra $5.30 a month for sewer service, so the city can cover rising maintenance costs and make up for a sewage treatment plant upgrade, which cost $11 million more than originally planned.

A study of local rates suggests that the average sewer cost in La Crosse could be raised about 3 percent a year, starting in 2025.

Tina Erickson, the finance manager for La Crosse’s sewer utility, said a big factor in the rate hikes is the cost of a recent upgrade to the sewage treatment plant, which came in higher than predicted in a 2019 study.

Erickson added that the hiring of new staff and rising costs related to COVID-19 also contributed to the rate increase.

Only $11 million more. Oh, well. Looks like we’ll just have to pass it on to the homeowners.

Who writes the contracts for these deals…La Crosse Center, Riverside levy, wastewater plant, the taxpayer takes it in the shorts every ime. The projects are all late and over budget. Who is held accountable?

And don’t blame it on “covid” or “democracy.”
