The fall figures for student enrollment at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse are more positive than statewide numbers released a week earlier.

UW-L said the official enrollment total for fall, based on the 10th day of classes, is 25 students higher than last year at 10,327 students.

In 2019, the school set a record by almost 300 students. The past two years, UW-L has set back-to-back records for incoming freshman.

Retention is a key factor for the increase. La Crosse officials say 87 percent of last year’s freshmen are still on campus this semester. It’s the highest retention level in a decade.

About 10 percent of the La Crosse students are classified as persons of color.
