As I See It

If not Biden vs Trump, then who?

Will it be Biden against Trump again in 2024? Let’s hope not. Former President Donald Trump has already announced his run for the White House, while President Joe Biden is said to be planning to run for a second term. Biden isn’t even all that popular in his own party, and Trump’s baggage keeps getting bigger. So who else is out there? For Republicans, the list includes former UN Secretary Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is acting very much like a candidate and has been actively fundraising. Other possible Republican candidates include former Vice-President Mike Pence, although he would seem unlikely to attract much backing from Trump supporters. Other contenders include former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Texas Senator Ted Cruz. There are plenty of Democratic candidates too, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Vice-President Kamala Harris. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg could run again, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been mentioned as a possible candidate. None may be perfect candidates, and there may be others still considering a run. Either way, let’s hope our choices in the next election are more than just Biden or Trump.

It’s far too early to be worried about an election almost two years away. Far too much money and time is wasted on elections. The US should have a much shorter time for this, similar to the Parliament Elections in Canada or England, of six weeks.
