Gov. Evers, at Coon Valley farm, announces $50 million in economic relief
When Washington supplies $50 million to Wisconsin farmers for economic relief from the pandemic, that’s not chicken feed.
Roosters and dairy cows supplied some of the scenery at a Coon Valley area farm on Wednesday, as Governor Tony Evers announced the latest relief money to be offered to farmers.
“There’s a group of industries in the state that has suffered the most by this pandemic,” Evers said at the Peters family farm. “Agriculture is one. Tourism is another. Mainstreet businesses, whether it’s in Coon Valley or La Crosse, that’s another area.”
An individual farm can apply for up to $3,500 in direct payments.
The state set aside $50 million in federal aid for farmers last year. It’s offering another $50 million for 2021.
State Agriculture Secretary Randy Romanski said COVID-19 has been devastating to the food industry on different levels.
“For agriculture, it led to disruptions in the supply chain that affected producers, processors, and consumers,” said Romanski, who made stops around the state with Evers at Coon Valley and other locations.
