Anybody in La Crosse who had a flooded lawn or tried to drive through high water in a street on Saturday experienced history first-hand.

The National Weather Service says Saturday’s rainfall of 5.59 inches is the most on record for any single day in La Crosse’s history.

The old record of 5.55 inches had stood for almost 140 years, since September of 1884.

Saturday was the city’s rainiest day since June 18th of 2011, also a Saturday, when 4.5 inches of rain fell in La Crosse.

The heavy rain spread from the Winona area to Adams and Juneau Counties, and led to flooding on many streets in La Crosse, along with road closings on several highways in Vernon County, around Chaseburg and Viola.
