La Crosse averaging 49 COVID-19 cases a day, but could see drop Friday; Iowa’s death toll jumps from 12 to 81 a day

Another 28 COVID-19 cases in La Crosse County on Thursday.

The county is now averaging 48.6 cases a day over the past week. A week ago that average was 44. The case average is likely to drop by about 10 Friday, if cases remain consistent, because last week Friday there were 144 cases reported.

Another 979 people were vaccinated in La Crosse, according to the state, and 18,156 county residents have now been inoculated. Vaccine information statewide and by county can be found by clicking here.

In surrounding counties, Monroe continues to be the only one averaging double-digit cases. Jackson County has had no new cases the past two days.

Statewide, looking at the numbers below, the biggest that stands out is Iowa’s average deaths has jumped from 12 a day last week to 81 a day this past week. Iowa data showed 124 deaths Thursday, 56 Wednesday, along with 250 Sunday. The state has given no reasoning for the huge increase.

The state, Thursday, also surpassed 5,000 total deaths — 60% of those have happened in the past five months.

Wisconsin and Minnesota are slowly leveling out, after seeing cases, hospitalizations and death averages lowering week to week.

Wisconsin has had 297 hospitalizations the past three days, however.
