UWL prepares for more COVID testing, as campus reopens for spring

La Crosse’s state university campus is ready to reopen for the spring semester on Monday, even as the COVID pandemic continues.

Thousands of students and employees at UWL were tested for the virus during the fall.

Vice Chancellor Bob Hetzel says the students living on campus will be asked to get frequent testing after classes resume on Monday: every week for dorm residents, and every other week for students from off-campus and university staff.

The surge testing clinic which opened at Cartwright Center in November has been closed this week, but it’s reopening on Monday as well.

UWL had to shut down its campus buildings last March, when COVID-19 began spreading seriously throughout the country.

Hetzel says if all goes well, vaccines will be on the way to campus in about a month.
